Norton Lindsey v Broadway 1st – Premier Division, Saturday 22nd June

Broadway 254 for 6, Norton Lindsey 209 all out. Broadway won by 34 runs.

Norton Lindsey 8 points Broadway 22.

Report by Nigel Evans

After a run of four consecutive defeats Broadway returned to the winner’s circle prevailing in a rain interrupted tussle at Wolverton Road.

On an overcast rain threatened day, the visitors lost the toss and had first use of a hard dry strip that looked full of runs. Their innings stuttered immediately as they lost opener Jackson as he tried to leave his second ball. Skipper G Evans joined youngster McDonagh and they set about laying solid foundations to the innings. The opening bowlers McInnes and particularly Bliwert (1 for 25) applied significant early pressure, and the batsmen had to ride their luck early on, G Evans being dropped at slip. It was a miss that would prove costly as Evans grew in confidence and produced flowing drives and deft deflections, and mixed scoring shots all-round the ground as the accumulation grew apace.

The hundred was passed in the 28th over and progress wasn’t interrupted until they had added 115 for the second wicket, when McDonagh’s patience broke and he ran passed a delivery and was stumped for 36. Humpston, 22 from only 19 balls tried to add impetus before he too was stumped, although not before he’d managed to irritate the tea lady by planting a slog sweep through her back window! When Powell perished in the same over top edging an attempted cut, Broadway looked to be stalling at 160 for 4 after 35 overs.

G Evans however was ever present throughout and continued his merry way punishing even the slightest error of line or length. His excellent knock ended when he was caught at backward point for 98 off only 100 deliveries, as he miscued a cut which should have brought him a deserve ton. Veteran N Evans (49 from 36 balls, including one sensational 75 yard straight hit 6) took on the mantle of aggressor and in tandem with Phillips (not out 24 from 14) ushered the total beyond 200. In a flurry of boundaries with both batsmen enjoying some fortune, generally at the unfortunate Melly’s (3 for 58) expense, they elevated the total to an imposing 254 for 6, with 60 runs scored from the final 5 overs.

The game was threatened by occasional squalls of rain and these caused an extension of tea which reduced the game by two overs, leaving Norton to score 243 in 43 overs for victory.

Broadway’s opening attack found plenty of assistance from the pitch and created early opportunities, but unfortunately none of the three fielders could keep hold of the catches. They managed to maintain the pressure and it told when McDonagh’s fielding proved too sharp for Currall and he was run out for just 3. Suni immediately followed caught at the wicket off the irrepressible Smallman who was unfortunate to end with only 1 for 39 from his allocation. It took the introduction of young buck Horsburgh however to crack open the match as he ripped the heart out of the batting line up sending back Ashley bowled for 3, Robins for a duck and opener Melly for 24 both caught at the wicket, as he finished with 4 for 37. At 60 for 6, from 20 overs the home looked set to capitulate, but their lower order had other ideas.

Broadway’s change bowlers struggled with cooling, windy darkening conditions, and they toiled under an incredible counter attack. McInnes started it with a breezy 28, but Tustain (33) and certainly Baker (73) more than added to it. Having needed 183 from only 23 overs with 4 wickets left, they had brought the equation to around 50 inside 6 overs, having scored at in excess of 10 an over for the preceding 7 overs! Inexplicably Tustain ran himself out trying a kamikaze run to the keeper and the innings tamely subsided. Baker had lost his main ally and in a final flurry he was

pouched at long on impressively by young McDonagh off G Evans (2 for 20) bringing the curtain down on a strange but compelling encounter.

2nd team report v Earlswood 3rds - by Steve Wheeler

Broadway’s 2nds also won as they chased down just over 200 against Earlswood 3rds for the loss of 6 wickets, as the batsmen made up for a poor bowling and fielding display.

Broadway won the toss and as usual Wheeler decided to field first. The opening partnership between Murphy (59) and Dennison (38) was dominated by the latter, before Willett made the initial breakthrough having Dennison caught behind. Smith was run out by a direct hit from midwicket by Gino Carenza, making a rare apperance. D.Snipe rebuilt with skipper Murphy - who was looking to bat through and hold the innings together. Snope was eventually caught by Pedley off Carlo Carenza for 28. Murphy and N.Snipe both fell to Marston - who was the pick of the attack - with Murphy being well caught at long on by Frank Carenza and Snipe being adjudged LBW. Mendoza picked up the 6th and final wicket of Gill - who chopped on - for 13. Earlswood finished on 208 for 6, which was aided by some very sloppy fielding (after 2 excellent fielding displays in the past fortnight), Marston with 2 for 34 off his 10 was the pick of the attack.

On yet another fantastic track produced by groundsman John Evans, 209 was very obtainable. Holmes and F.Carenza saw off the initial burst before both fell in quick succession for 13 each. Wheeler and Williams then looked to rebuild the innings, before Wheeler fell for a quickfire and streaky 29 with the score at 66/3.

Williams was slow initially, but was beginning to accelerate with Marston, when he fell for 16, to leave the score at 101/4. The match winning partnership then followed between Marston and Pedley. Initially both targetted the boundaries, but when the fielders pushed back, some good batting and running tilted the game Broadways way, as the fielding side grew frustrated. The pair added 105 in 17 overs to take Broadway to within 3 of victory, when Pedley was dismissed for 44 (his highest Broadway score). C.Carenza followed for a duck to give Earlswood another point, before Marston capped a fine display by hitting the winning boundary with over 2 overs left. Marston finished unbeaten on a fine 71, and the seconds moved up to fourth in Division 5.
