Broadway results versus Bretforton and Elmley

Broadway 1st v Bretforton – Premier Division, Saturday 26th May

In perfect conditions the visitors bounced back to winning ways at the expense of the previous unbeaten hosts. Having won the toss the Bretforton openers started patiently, but with positive running and occasional boundaries they built a solid platform.

Kiwi, Tim Wilson, was the first to go for 30 trapped in front by the wily Powell (1-36). This brought the promising 17 year old Joey Cafero to the crease but his bright innings was curtailed when he was run out after a good piece of fielding by Hawkins. The Broadway bowlers stuck to their task well in the heat and continued to chip away at the inexperienced batting line up. Horsbrough (3-40), G Evans, Stewart and Smallman all contributed and reduced Bretforton to 150-8. With Bretforton skipper Witts still at the crease however they maintained a hope of a competitive total and when he found an ally in Alex Evans, they forged a match winning partnership.  When he eventually fell to a fine catch by N Evans he had they had elevated the total well beyond 200.

The Broadway reply began badly with G Evans feathering one to the keeper off Witts and N Evans haplessly picking out square leg. 9 for 2 turned into 43 for 3 when Humpston was bowled through the gate. The response from the home side was positive. A flurry of flowing drives and flicks ensued from M Evans (46) but when he fell tamely the home side were still in trouble. Powell (86) was at his belligerent best continually clearing the ropes and while he was at the crease all looked good for Broadway. When he was eventually caught on the third man boundary, Phillips (32) took on the mantle with some equally ferocious hitting. With a shade over 50 required but plenty of overs remaining Broadway looked handily placed, but when Phillips was unfortunately run out the Broadway lower order failed to deal with an all spin attack and subsided to a 20 run defeat.

In a disappointing day for the club an under strength Broadway 2nd XI made the short journey to Elmley. The visitors slipped to a paltry 84 all out with only skipper Wheeler (40 not out) providing any resistance. They failed to claim a scalp in the reply and lost by 10 wickets.
