First wins of the season

Both Broadway league teams delivered their first victories of the season with the 1sts beating Elmley Castle by 101 runs and the 2nds beating Welford by seven wickets.

1st XI skipper Barry Clements won the toss and decided to bat first on a beautiful day. Clements was soon into his rhythm, hitting two boundaries off the first over from Will Bailey. At the other end fellow opener Steve Wheeler looked a lot more circumspect against the bowling of Neil Cooper. Clements was dismissed from the first ball of the third over when an unplayable delivery from Bailey clipped the top of his off stump. Jamie Powell was promoted as a pinch-hitter to the number three slot, and powerfully hit two quick boundaries before being caught at mid-off for 10. Wheeler started to look more confident hitting two boundaries before being trapped in front on the crease by Bailey for 13 - the score at this stage was 36 for 3.

Then came the key partnership of the game between Chioke Payne and Gary Hawkins. Payne could easily have been dismissed from his first ball when an inside edge just missed his stumps. After this he grew in confidence and was hitting the ball to all areas, Hawkins happy to play the supporting role. Payne had reached a quick fire 70 when he was surprisingly dismissed; trying to work the ball to leg side he got a leading edge and was well caught at slip by Webb after the ball had been in the air for what seemed an eternity, the partnership was worth 83 and was by far the highest of the day. There followed a bit of a collapse as Matt Phillips was caught behind without scoring, James Cutler followed soon after also without scoring when he was adjudged LBW trying to sweep the legspinner. Richard Pedley was caught at short midwicket for four as Broadway had collapsed to 146 for 7. Running out of partners Hawkins now started to play some shots and having scored 47 he was dismissed caught at mid on trying to hit over the top. Adam Smallman hit one big six before being caught and bowled by Brown for 14. The final wicket was Carlo Carenza caught at short leg for 1, leaving Nick Stewart 8 not out.

In the field Broadway were excellent with some impressive fast bowling backed up by some excellent catching. After a slow start to the innings by Elmley, opening bowler Nick Stewart provided the breakthrough having Pete Cross caught by Clements at 1st slip for one. Stewart was now on a roll and quickly had Brown caught behind by Hawkins for two and then Eaton shuffling across his crease LBW for 8. Stewart was well supported from the other end by Pedley who was beating the outside edge on several occasions. Jamie Powell replaced Pedley and soon had Howman caught at slip by Smallman for 9. Powell followed this up by having Cooper caught behind by Hawkins for 3; at this stage Elmley had been reduced to 48 for 5. Another couple of wickets fell without addition to this score as Smallman took slip catches off both Powell and Stewart. Powell got his fourth wicket with Bailey well caught by Philips at gully. From 52 for 8, Elmley mounted something of a recovery aided by Broadway giving away 45 runs in extras. The score had reached 88 when Pedley got a well deserved wicket having Flower caught by Phillips for 8. Powell wrapped the match up with his fifth wicket bowling Webb for four. Powell finished with figures of 5 for 17, with Stewart taking 4 for 22 from a 10 over spell in searing heat. Broadway collected 23 points.

The 2nd XI also had a comprehensive 7 wicket victory over early-season pacesetters Welford. Captain Will Jelfs' decision to bowl first paid dividends, as Josh Burford 3 for 36, Warren Marston 2 for 30, Luke McDonagh 2 for 25 and Matt Ross 2 wickets for no runs, dismissed Welford for 115. Burford bowled with impressive pace and is certainly proving a handful for division 5 batsmen.

In reply Broadway lost Kevin Holmes early for 5, but a partnership between Luke McDonagh and Dave Williams calmed any nerves in the dressing room. McDonagh was the more aggressive batsmen with Williams happy to play a supporting role. Both were dismissed shortly before Broadway reached their target McDonagh scored an impressive 68 whilst Williams scored 21. Andy Beale and Warren Marston took Broadway to their target with over 20 overs remaining.

On Sunday the junior sides had mixed results with the Under 13s beating Bredon, whilst the the Under 11s lost to the same opposition.
