MATCH REPORT for 12th May 2018
Posted by Jemma Carenza on 13 May 2018
Another excellent weekend for Broadway Cricket Club. Both sides recorded impressive wins. The 1st XI played at home against Stanway and captain Carlo Carenza elected to bowl first after winning the toss. Broadway bowled well at times but there were signs of rustiness at time, in particular, in the field with Broadway squandering several chances. Stanway made 267 giving the Broadway batsmen plenty of work to do. Broadway chased down the score in the 43 over with a fantastic display of batting demonstrating the strength in the depth we have in our batting line up this season. Kevin Holmes, Gary Hawkins and Jamie Powell all started the season with fine displays with the bat each scoring 50+ in our season opener. The 1's host fellow table toppers Ashorne next week at home in what is likely to be a tough fixture.
The 2's continued their fantastic start and resurgence under captain Peter Hands(Shady). The 2's posted a huge score of 317 absolutely battering the Bretforton bowlers after the drinks break. Warren Marston yet again showed his class with the bat scoring another Ton for Broadway and he was excellently supported by Jason Horsborough who smashed 98 NO just falling short of his maiden hundred for BCC. It was a fantastic display of power and big hitting as the ball sailed to every corner of Bretforton. Dave Snell also made a top contribution just falling short of his first fifty for Broadway. Judging by yesterday's performance he won't have to wait long. After destroying Bretforton's bowling attack Broadway set to work on their batting line with Shady and Jason making a fine start and picking up 5 wickets between them in their opening spell. Danny Mendoza came on and picked up four of his own by bamboozling the batsman as they never knew what was going to come next. The 2's capped off a fantastic day by bowling Bret out for under a hundred and picking up an impressive 24 points
It has been a fantastic couple of weeks for Broadway Cricket Club as only a few seasons ago many had written us off and thought the club was finished as we struggled to find 22 players every week. After a huge amount of hard work we have rebuilt our club from the tatters it was left in and we have now assembled a bigger squad than ever stacked with talented players. The vibe around the club is the best I've ever known it and both sides are United as one club. Broadway CC certainly appear to be on the up and hopefully long may it continue as they're a few places more beautiful to either play or watch a game of cricket on a Saturday afternoon.
Please feel free to come down and support us on a Saturday afternoon. The bar is now open all day under new bar manager Gary Petit.
