Match reports - 16th May

Posted by Nobody on 17 May 2015

Both Broadway sides recorded their firsts wins of the season at the third attempt, with the firsts beating Leamington thirds by 74 runs and the seconds beating Catherine De Barnes seconds by three wickets,

First team skipper Barry Clements won the toss and - depsite the woeful batting performance last week - decided to bat first. Clements began with a boundary in the first over and looked in great touch from the start on what seemed an easy paced wicket. Steve Wheeler was promoted up the order to open with Clements and, despite playing and missing several times, offered solid support. Clements reached his fifty in good time before the drinks break and, with the help of some extras, the pair extended their opening partnership to 100 in the 24th over.

Wheeler was the first man to fall, bowled off his pads for 18. Matt Phillips followed in the next over for a duck, unable to get out of the way from a brute of a ball from Credgington. Clements followed two overs later for 58 bowled by Credgington - who surprisingly was not introduced into the attack until the 25th over. Bruce Ford was dismissed in the same over bowled by a Credginton grubber. The score had slipped from 100 for 0 to 113 for 4.

Jamie Powell joined Marcus Humpston in the middle and the two hard hitting batsmen stablised the innings briefly before accelerating to get Broadway to a competitive score. Humpston hit two massive sixes - clearing the bungalows to the left and hitting the pavillion roof (these were just two of eight sixes that he hit, to go with six boundary fours). Powell made a quickfire 26 (including two sixes of his own) before getting the faintest of nicks behind off McCarthy.

Dave Williams (the best batsman from last week) joined Humpston in the middle and off his seventh ball hit a sumptous cover drive boundary four. Humpston by now was in full flow, and despite running Williams into the ground with several quick singles, the pair added 92 runs in just nine overs, before Williams was caught behind for 12. Humpston was on 96 going into the penultimate over when attempting a 'dilscoop' was caught at short fine leg - a sad end to a fine knock from just 56 balls. Josh Burford was run out without scoring, and Broadway ended on 274 for 8 with Jason Horsburgh two not out and Adam Smallman six not out.

In reply Josh Burford dismissed Davison second ball with a lifter that the opener couldn't avoid and nicked through to Humpston. Burford bowled a short two over spell and Pedley a three over spell from the other end, as Leamington kept up with the required run rate in the early stages. Horsburgh and Powell replaced the pair and stemmed the flow of runs. Horsburgh dismissed Killian for 12, caught at short mid on by Burford. Magill followed in the next over, well caught at slip by Clements off Powell. Lord made 20 before Horsburgh had him caught by a diving Smallman at second slip. Horsburgh then had Dale LBW second ball, and Lord (junior) was bowled first ball. The hat-trick ball was safely negotiated by Williams. Leamington were 81 for six.

The pair of Gill and Williams then began to rebuild, and added 93 for the seventh wicket, the pair didn't take any undue risks, without letting the required run rate become unmanageable. With Powell and Horsburgh having bowled their alloted overs, and fifth bowler Smallman struggling to find his rhythm, Clements called on Pedley and Burford again. Pedley took the crucial seventh wicket, having Williams caught at long on by Jamie Powell. Credgington took a suicidal third run to Matt Phillips at long off and was run out (following good work at the stumps from Burford. Humpston then took a smart leg side stumping off Pedley to dismiss Rehman. Number 11 batsman McCarthy joined Gill - who played a couple of cracking straight drives - and the pair took Leamington to 200 and maximum bonus points, before Burford ended the game bowling Gill - on the charge - for 66. Broadway picked up maximum points and a valuable win.

The second team also got their first win of the season with a three wicket win over Catherine De Barnes seconds, in a low scoring game.

Catherine De Barnes scored 151 for seven with Warren Marston taking two wickets, Carlo Carenza, Gary Hawkins, James Hands and Matt Ross taking one each, plus a run out from Carenza.

In reply Kevin Holmes and Frank Carenza put on 70 for the first wicket, with Holmes scoring 40 and Carenza 20, before a 'Broadway' collapse, with Hands, 'Rusty' Brown, Hawkins and Andy Beale dismissed in single figures. Marston steadied the ship though, supported by Ross and Sam Hopkins, as Broadway inched towards their target. Hopkins ended the match in style, hitting a straight six back over the bowlers head. After two defeats in Division four, this was a much needed victory.
