Welcome to the 2011 season
Posted by Nobody on 19 April 2011
Broadway CC started their preparations for the new season at the end of January with a couple of training sessions with ex England spinner & current professional umpire, Richard Illingworth & since then the club has been having weekly indoor net sessions at Prince Henry's Sports Hall.
With both Broadway CC's Saturday sides achieving Promotion from their respective Divisions in 2009, the target for 2010 was always going to be to consolidate their positions in the Higher Division. In 2011 however the club will be looking to progress further, with the 1st XI looking to challenge for the Top Positions in the Premier Division & the 2nd XI looking to gain promotion up to the Cotswold Hills league Division 4.
On paper the Broadway squad is as strong this season as it has been for several years. The 1st XI will once again be captained by Barry Clements who maintains his desire to see Broadway become a force once again. Several 1st team players will be looking to kick on in 2011 after solid rather than spectacular 1st season' back in the Premier Division in 2010. Of the bowlers Nick Stewart has already stated his intention to improve significantly on his league tally of wickets from 2010 and has looked sharp in winter nets. Adam Smallman has also recovered from a back injury sustained over the winter and will be looking to establish himself as an all-rounder in 2011. Of the batsman - who all had relatively healthy averages in 2010 - they will be looking to continue to improve on 2010's work & convert starts into big scores. With exciting batsmen such as Marcus Humpston, Jamie Anderson, Jamie Powell & Matt Phillips in the line-up plenty of pyrotechnics can be expected this season.
The 2nd XI will be captained by Steve Wheeler who after 3 years of being a 'bit-part' player in the 1st XI will be looking to make some big scores this season at the top of the order. Wheeler has stated his aim to develop some of the 2nd XI players into 1st XI players during the season. Among the 2nd XI players Luke McDonagh & Carlo Carenza have impressed at winter nets - following their coaching from Richard Illingworth. McDonagh will be looking to progress into the 1st XI as the season goes on. Established players such as Carenza, Hands & Hawkins will be looking to put in some performances to gain promotion to the 1st XI.
Overall the club is looking in positive shape for the season. The players will be going down to the ground on Sunday 10th April for the annual 'spring clean', all are encouraged to come and help out - to make our beautiful ground look......beautiful.
Not long to go.....
