Season off to a winning start

Broadway began the 2013 season with a 5-wicket victory over Corley, in a hastily arranged fixture.
Corley batted first and nearly lost a wicket first ball when Rogers offered a difficult chance to Jimmy Martin in the cover. Corley soon fell to 39 for 5 in tough batting conditions and against some quality bowling from Jamie Powell - who took four of the first five wickets to fall -, supported by Nick Stewart.
After an initial burst from the two first team openers, the Corley batsmen began to settle down, their cause was aided by a nasty injury to Richard Pedley who broke his thumb in attempting a sharp catch at mid on. Pedley was midway through his bowling spell.
The sixth wicket fell with the score at 80 as skipper Gary Evans bowled Lenton. An aggressive partnershop between McGrane & Blowers took the score to 135 before Danilo Mendoza picked up the wicket of McGrane for 56. The last three wickets helped boost the total to 191 with Broadway looking very rusty in the field. The last three wickets were picked up by Mendoza, Stewart and Powell, who ended with figures of 5 for 30.
Chasing 192 to win Broadway soon lost Gary Evans, LBW and Marcus Humpston caught at point. Jimmy Martin on his first game in over a year, following a year off travelling, was beginning to look in very good touch and was supported by Steve Wheeler. The pair moved the score to 110, before Wheeler was LBW for 32. With the required run rate starting to increase, Martin then upped the tempo, Matt Phillips and Bernie Donoghue both made a single each, before the real fireworks began.
Jamie Powell has a reputation as being a big hitter and he showed exactly why, easing Broadway to victory with an unbeaten 43 off just 17 balls - five of which were hit for six and three of which for boundary fours. Victory arrived with five and a half overs remaining, with Martin unbeaten on a fine 73.
Many thanks to Corley for playing at such short notice, following the cancellation of our game against Woodmancote, and we hope the fixture now becomes a regular one in the future.
