Smallman is Key-man in Broadway victory

A useful contribution with the bat, and a devastating spell with the ball, from Adam Smallman inspired Broadway to a 32 run victory over Stratford Bards.
Broadway made 3 changes from the side that had won at Tanworth & Camp Hill the previous week. Nigel Evans, Chris Close & Barry Clements were replaced by Gary Hawkins, Nick Stewart & Steve Wheeler - making his 1st premier division appearance of the season, following the cancellation of the clubs 2nd XI fixture.
Stratford won the toss and elected to bowl, with the match reduced to 40 overs per side, due to a wet outfield. The Evans Brothers (Gary & Mark) looked comfortable early on, and it was a surprise when Mark was bowled by Jolly for 13 - chopping a short delivery on to his stumps. Gary followed soon after also bowled by Jolly by a ball that kept low. Gary Hawkins struggled for rhythm at the wickets and was caught behind, leaving Broadway in early trouble.
Marcus Humpston tried to take the attack to the bowlers hitting 2 quick boundaries, before being bowled round his legs, via his thigh pad. The 5th wicket partnership between Andy Beale & Smallman proved crucial in the context of the game. The pair added 30 for the 5th wicket, with Beale (22) looking in good touch at the wicket & it was again a surprise when he was dismissed LBW off Lythall. Jamie Powell soon followed for 2.
Smallman was now becoming the key wicket for Bards to get and he was helped by useful cameos from Wheeler (11) & Matt Phillips (14). Jason Horsburgh and Nick Stewart helped Smallman get Broadway past the 150 mark. Before Smallman was last man out, trying to hit out at the end of the innings for a vital 25 from 87 balls. Broadways total of 154 was probably about par.
Stratford Innings got off to a good start, as opening bowlers Stewart & Powell struggled for rhythm. Powell did get the initial breakthrough trapping Dawson LBW. Stratford had reached 50 for 1, before Smallman made an immediate breakthrough having opener Young caught at point, when a short ball got big on the batsman. Harris soon followed LBW.
Killian & Cross began to steady the ship taking the score to 80 for 3, before Killian - after grafting to a hard made 30 - was caught (at the 2nd attempt) on the long off boundary by Jamie Powell off the bowling of Andy Beale. Thereafter Beale & Smallman bowled in great partnership, with Beale's various flight and pace dumbfounding the batsmen & Smallmans pace and bounce giving no let up at the other end.
Smallman picked up Broadway Career best figures of 6 for 19, 1 clean bowled, 2 LBW, 3 caught. Beale had 3 for 24 and finished the match by having Lythall caught at point by Jason Horsburgh, to cap a good fielding and especially bowling performance.
