Smallman targets progress

New vice-captain Adam Smallman has insisted the club can build on last seasons 4th place finish and challenge for title honours in the 2012 season.
With former club captain Barry Clements relinquishing the role at the end of the 2011 season, Gary Evans has stepped up to the role in 2012 - a job he has been being groomed for over the last few seasons - leaving Smallman as the slightly surprising candidate to the fill the vice captain role, having only joined the club in 2009.
Smallman said ''I'm looking to forward to building on last years 4th place finish, I hope to support the team as vice captain and help Gary when needed on and off the field, if we manage to bring in 1 or 2 new faces that can only help to strengthen the 22 that we put out each week''
Smallman became a key member of the 1st XI bowling attack in 2011, taking 25 league wickets, after only taking 7 in total during his first 2 seasons with the club. Smallman puts this down to physio he has been having following a long standing back injury. A side effect of his improved bowling form though, has been a regression in his batting form, a side of the game that he is hoping to improve over the season ''with the ball I am going to try and be more consistent so that I can be relied on to nowl 10 overs each week if required. Last year I didn't contribute with the bat as I would have liked, I hope to improve on this area, I want to be there at the end to help us win games''
Smallman has tipped opening bowler Nick Stewart as a key player for 2012. Stewart' figures perhaps didn't do his bowling justice last season, Smallman commented ''Nick bowled consistent lines last year without much luck. This year I see Nick challenging for top wicket taker, whilst maintaining his low economy rate''
