Weekend Review

Broadway CC enjoyed their finest weekend of the season as both Saturday sides recorded vital league wins.
The 1st XI defeated relegation threatened Tanworth & Camp Hill. Captain Gary Evans won the toss and chose to bowl, opening bowlers Nick Stewart (10-6-14-0) & Jamie Powell (2-34) kept the run-rate down with some economical bowling - Stewart bowling 6 maidens in his 10 overs -. Powell got the initial breakthrough, trapping Weir LBW.
Thereafter the spin of Andy Beale (3-36) & the medium pace of G.Evans (3-27) kept the run rate down, backed up by some fine fielding, notably from James Martin who held 2 catches on the long off boundary. Tanworth were restricted to 156 for 8 off their 45 overs.
In reply G.Evans & Gary Hawkins fell early on both caught. This brought together the experienced pair of Chris Close & Beale. Both scored valuable 30's, before a quickfire 40 from Marcus Humpston and 20 not out from Powell - from just 11 balls, with 3 sixes - saw Broadway home by 5 wickets, with the best part of 13 overs remaining.
The 2nd XI also had an impressive victory at Promotion chasing Long Itchington. The 2nd XI were depleted by 1st team call ups & player unavailabilty. Meaning former 2nd XI player Bernie Donoghue was called out of retirement, 2 youth team players Sam Donoghue & George Foxall made their senior debuts and Stuart Bearcroft made just his 2nd appearance for the club.
Broadway bowled 1st and restricted the hosts to 166 all out off 43.3 overs. This was thanks to an economical 10 over opening spell each by Carenza & Willett - who picked up the 1st wicket to fall. James Hands then took 5 wickets ripping through the middle order. At 1 stage Hands took 4 wickets in 2 overs. New signing Mendoza also bowled a good 10 over spell picking up a wicket. It was left to B.Donoghue & Bearcroft to finish off the innings with 3 late wickets.
In reply Broadway had a poor start, slumping to 4 for 3 with the top 3 batsman all registering ducks against some impressive bowling. Steve Wheeler stuck around & was ably supported by Carenza & Will Jelfs who helped see off the new ball. At 30 for 4 off 21 overs, Broadway appeared to playing for pride. But Bearcroft counter attacked from number 7 hitting a fantastic 54 on his 1st innings for the club, whilst Wheeler (64 not out) rotated the strike. It went down to the 46th over when Bearcroft was run out with 3 runs needed, but Wheeler managed to squeeze the winning runs through with 1 ball remaining - to spark joyous scenes from the away side.
On Sunday a very young Broadway side lost a thrilling high scoring friendly at Exhall & Wixford. Exhall registered an impressive 260 for 4 off their 40 overs - Alex Robinson & Gary Evans were the most succesful bowlers with 2 for 54 and 2 for 53 respectively.
In reply Broadway fell just 7 short with the 1st XI trio of Gary (56) & Mark Evans (73) as well as Marcus Humpston (72) all hitting 50's at better than a run-a-ball.
