Weekend review 28/29th May

Posted by Nobody on 30 May 2011

Broadway CC suffered their worst weekend of the season so far, with both the 1st XI & 2nd XI losing vital league fixtures.

The 1st XI slipped to defeat against pre-season title contenders Bretforton. Broadway batted 1st and after a relatively solid start by Nigel & Gary Evans, a middle order collapse left Broadway in some serious trouble. A recovery was led by Marcus Humpston & the in form all rounder Jamie Powell. Humpston scored a quick fire 47 (4 fours and 4 sixes) & Powell scored 61 off just 34 balls (3 fours and 6 sixes). Further cameos from Adam Smallman & Matt Phillips (27 off just 12 balls) carried Broadway to a respectable 209 for 8 from a reduced 40 overs.

In reply Bretforton' openers got off to a good start & Bretforton were always ahead of the required run rate, despite an economical spell from Smallman. The target was reached with 6 wickets & 4 overs to spare. The 4 wickets were shared between Powell, Smallman, G.Evans & Humpston (1st of the season)

The 2nd XI slipped to defeat at Claverdon in a close low scoring game. Broadway batted 1st and at 1 stage reached a respectable 107 for 2, before a dramatic collapse, left them all out for 118. Only 7 boundaries were hit in the innings, due to a damp wicket & slow outfield. Opener Steve Wheeler carried his bat for an unbeaten 52, with a little support from Luke McDonagh (20). Claverdon captain Andrews had remarkable figures of 9.5 - 2 - 15 - 8.

Claverdon' reply was a shaky innings & wickets at vital times meant the result was in the balance until Whale hit a quickfire 29 not out to guide them to victory 4 wickets with 5 overs remaining. Special mention for the bowling figures of Tom Willett (10 - 7  - 4  - 1) who bowled an exceptional spell & deserved more wickets. Josh Burford picked up 2 for 35.

On Sunday the club took part in the annual 6-a-side tournament at Bretforton. Broadway won 1 and lost 3 of their 4 games. Due to some inconsistent batting ! - an enjoyable day was had though.
